How to Cleanse & Store Your Tarot Cards at Home

Over time, cards can absorb energy from readings, environments, and emotions, which may affect their clarity. Different readers have different ways of carrying out the ritual.
There are several simple ways to cleanse your tarot deck at home. One of the most common methods is using smoke from incense or sage.

Gently pass your deck through the smoke while setting an intention to clear any lingering energy.

Another effective method is placing your cards under moonlight, especially during a full moon. This allows the deck to recharge naturally. If you prefer a quicker option, you can knock on the deck a few times or shuffle thoroughly while focusing on resetting its energy.

Placing them on a sunlit window is also a good option, however over time if placed in strong sunlight the cards are susceptible to their colors fading.

Some people also like to store their tarot cards with crystals such as clear quartz or selenite, which are believed to have cleansing properties. A clear quartz infact is an excellent choice, if placed on top of the cards and left overnight.

Placing your cards on a selenite plate also resets the energy of your cards. Burning a candle near it while focusing on clearing the energy works well too.

Ultimately, the most important part of cleansing is your intention. Choose a method that feels right to you and use it consistently to keep your readings grounded and focused.

There are several ways to store your cards, you can wrap them up in a muslin, velvet or any clean cloth that you feel fancies your eye. Wooden, carved, stone boxes also work well for storing your tarot cards.

There are many tarot readers that do not allow a second person to touch their cards, and some are ok to. So the reader reads for the querant, but does not allow the querant to pull the cards. But in some cases, readers are ok to let the querant pull their own cards after shuffling them.

Cleansing your own aura, after a reading is a practice that most tarot readers follow, you can wash your hands and feet in salt water, or simply running water.

Placing a quartz crystal near the area or work desk that you read in works best, however, there are other protective, and energizing stones that do an equally good job.
