Best Tarot Spreads for Beginners
If you are just starting with your journey in the Tarot it can feel overwhelming, but using simple spreads can make the process much easier and more enjoyable.
Beginner-friendly spreads help you focus your interpretation without getting lost in too many details.
One of the most popular spreads is the three-card spread. It can be used in many ways, such as past-present future or situation-challenge-advice.
This flexibility makes it ideal for learning how cards interact with each other.
Another great option is the one-card pull. While simple, it encourages you to develop intuition and build a daily connection with your deck. It’s perfect for quick guidance or reflection on daily life happenings. It will also strengthen your knowledge about each card.
An exercise I really find useful is pulling one card, observing it, notice the colors, pattern’s what are the characters doing, who do you think they resemble in your life, notice their actions, elements around them, symbols and colors they are wearing. What is your first impression when you see the card, how does it make you feel? Write it down, you can maintain a journal as your daily reflection journal. You will find that your intuition and your knowledge about the cards grows each day with this practice. You will notice similarities in some cards.
For those ready to explore a bit more, a five-card spread can provide deeper insight without becoming too complex. It often includes positions like current situation, obstacles, guidance, external influences, and outcome. You can lay them out in a star shape pattern and read.
The key as a beginner is to keep things simple and consistent. As you gain confidence, you can gradually explore more complex spreads and develop your own reading style.
My personal favorite and one simple way to make tarot reading easier especially when you’re still learning is to create your own spread template on paper. You can create individual templates, for relationship, career, love, education, there are countless topics you can choose from.
Using an A3 sheet or as large as you want it to be, you can map out your spread visually.
Draw or mark where each card will go, and label each position with its meaning, such as “Past,” “Present,” “Challenge,” or “Advice.” This gives you a clear structure to follow during your reading.
Having a physical layout in front of you removes the guesswork. Instead of trying to remember what each position represents, you can focus fully on interpreting the cards and connecting their meanings.
You can also get creative with it. Use colors, symbols, or even small notes to guide your intuition. Over time, this sheet can become your personal reading tool something that reflects your style and makes each session feel more grounded and intentional.
This is especially helpful for beginners, but even experienced readers use visual layouts to stay organized and deepen their focus.
Try this out and let me know as a reader how did you find this tip useful.
I have created my own large personal template sheets, that guide me well when I am doing a reading.
As time goes you can even create your own spreads, spreads that relatable and resonate with your thoughts and feelings. That is how you can grow as a Tarot reader.
